Tamar Lynn Pruett, 67, of Checotah, Oklahoma, formerly of Moore, Oklahoma, passed away on Friday, April 10, 2026, at her residence with her loving husband by her side.
She was born on October 15, 1958, in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of Leon Lawson and Iva (McAllister) Lawson-Wilson. She attended Fox Senior High and later continued her education in court reporting. Tamar grew up in Arnold, Missouri, where many of her earliest memories were made.
Tamar met the love of her life and soulmate, Paul Lewis Pruett, and they married on May 26, 1989 in Moore, Oklahoma. Their bond was undeniable. They both built a life together full of love, devotion, and shared memories.
Throughout her life, Tamar endured several heartbreaking pregnancy losses. Despite these hardships, she was blessed with one beautiful daughter, Dawn Smith, who brought her immense joy and pride.
Tamar was not affiliated with any formal religious organization, but she was deeply spiritual and believed strongly in God. Her faith was personal and meaningful, and along with her deep love for her family, it carried her through life’s many challenges.
Tamar was a beautiful, smart, and creative soul. Though she is no longer with us, she will forever remain 67 years young in the hearts of those who loved her. She is now reunited with her eight angel babies, whom she carried in her heart every day.
She will always be remembered for her free spirit, her warmth, her charisma, and her creative talents. Tamar found joy in life’s simple pleasures—gardening, canning, baking, fishing, and traveling back and forth from Oklahoma to Missouri to spend precious time with her beloved family and friends. Family was everything to Tamar, and she stood by those she loved with unwavering loyalty and strength, no matter the cost. She also had a fun, competitive side and was known for doing exceptionally well in games of Rummikub with her family. However, when it came to playing, she was a "cheater, cheater, chicken dinner." She'd hide tiles in her shirt—or anywhere she could—just to stay one step ahead without anyone noticing. Although everyone knew, it was all part of what made playing with her so memorable and so much fun.
Tamar is survived by her beloved husband of 36 years, Paul Pruett, of the home; her beautiful and most cherished daughter, Dawn Thomas of Shawnee, Oklahoma; her grandchildren, Gaven Thomas, Gabriel Thomas, Sky Burton and her husband, Andrew Burton; her great-grandchildren, Mandek Burton, Lincoln Burton, Kilynn Davidson, and Journey Burton; her brother, Kevin Lawson; her sisters, Joyce Meyerpeter, Karen Franklin, and Debbie Hager and a host of other family members and dear friends who will miss her greatly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leon and Iva Lawson, and her eight angel babies, with whom she is now lovingly reunited.
Honoring Tamar, cremation is planned. No formal services have been scheduled at this time.
Tamar’s love, strength, and free spirit will live on in all who knew her, and she will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Hunn Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 211 W. Okmulgee Ave., Checotah, Oklahoma 74426.
