Rodger Beaird Obituary

Rodger Leon Beaird, 81, of Checotah, Oklahoma, passed away Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at his home. Rodger was born on March 7, 1942, in Las Vegas, Nevada, the son of Floyd and Violet Ruth (Grant) Beaird. He attended Checotah High School. On June 17, 1964, he married Cora Mae Potts in Chicago, Illinois. They were happily married fifty-nine years. Rodger worked as an iron worker learning the business and eventually opening Galaxy Steel in Checotah, which he owned for 40 years.  Rodger enjoyed ranching, music, OU football, going to the "Gym" and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include: his wife, Cora, of the home; children, Shawndy Young of Checotah and Shannon Gaines and husband Torrey of Durant; grandchildren, Stacey Durrett and his wife, Bailey Jake Alvarez, Sarah Alvarez, Christian Martin, Kathryn Ristuccia and her husband David, Hannah Berryhill and her husband Austin and Luke Gaines; great grandchildren, Ava Alvarez and Bonnie Berryhill; sisters, Regina Shropshire and her husband Bobby of Checotah, Dovie Smith of Nashville, Tennessee, Lydia Underhill and her husband Glen of Checotah, sister-in-law,  Judy Beaird of Eufaula and many nieces, nephews and other family members. He is preceded in death by: his daughter, Sharmell Beaird; siblings, Jerry and Rita Beaird and his parents, Floyd and Violet Beaird.

A funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at the Hunn Funeral Home Chapel with Marcus Burkhalter officiating. Pallbearers are Torrey Gaines, Jake Alvarez, Stacey Durrett, Christian Martin, Luke Gaines and Jerry Fredrick. Honorary pallbearers are Bobby Shropshire, Paul King, Johnny McQuay, Charlie Wilson, Tony Lee, Marcus Burkhalter, Bryon Smith and Blake Keeter. Burial will follow at the Greenlawn Cemetery under the direction of Hunn Funeral Home & Cremation Service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the special education program at Checotah Public School in honor of Floyd Beaird who was instrumental in getting the program started.
