Mamie A. Fleming, 98, of Sand Springs, formerly of Muskogee, passed away on Tuesday, May 25th, 2021 at St. Francis Hospital Tulsa. She was born on March 30th, 1923 to Joseph Adam Mitchell and Mary Francis (Hayes) Mitchell in Westville, Oklahoma. Mamie grew up Fame, Oklahoma. Now you may not know where that is and that's because it no longer exists.
During World War II, Mamie worked as a certified welder in a shipyard in California. And that's why her friends called her "Rosie the Riveter" when she went to the senior citizens center. She also worked at Camp Gruber. Mamie was fun loving and never met a stranger. She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church . She loved hummingbirds, puzzles and Word Search. At one point, she bought a car but never learned to drive. Mamie loved to garden and would can everything she could. She was especially famous for her pickles. She taught all of her grandkids how to cook and play Yahtzee. Summers were spent with the grandkids and they all have wonderful memories of those days on Kershaw Drive. Mamie was a wonderful wife, mother, grandma, mammaw, bebo and friend.
Mamie was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Wayne Fleming; brothers, Frank, Joe, and Eugene; sisters, Silvia, Ann, Sue, Beatrice and Sarah and great-grandson, Joshua. She is survived by her son, Joe Fleming and wife Diane; daughters, Barbara Boyd and husband, Bill and Sharon Horton and husband Jerry; grandchildren, Kimberly, Tammy, Andrea, Courtney, Jeremie, Eric, Adam, and Kevin; great grandchildren, Zachary, Caleb, Jordan, Ciera, Makayla, Trevor, Sam, Audrey, Blayne, Ella, Park, Annie, and Noah; great great grandchildren, Cason, Braxton, Kase, Sam, Bexley, and a baby girl coming in September.
Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 27, 2021 at Fairview Baptist Church 3510 W. Peak Blvd., Muskogee. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, at Fairview Baptist Church with Pastor Bobby Morgan officiating. Pallbearers will be Shan Royse, Brian Chasteen, Eric Fleming, Adam Fleming, Zachary Stoy, and Caleb Royse. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery in Checotah.
