David “D.A.” August Campbell, Jr., age 84, of Checotah, Oklahoma, entered eternal life peacefully with his family by his side on Monday, March 9, 2026, in Haskell, Oklahoma, after bravely battling COVID-19, pneumonia, and lung cancer.
David was born on February 22, 1942, in Checotah, Oklahoma, to David August Campbell, Sr. and Bertha L. (Farmer) Campbell. He was raised in the Checotah area and graduated from Checotah High School in 1960, where he excelled in mathematics and graduated with honors.
As a young man, David worked for Jay Blackburn at Checotah Western Auto before proudly serving his country in the United States Air Force for four years. His time in the military reflected the same quiet strength, dedication, and sense of duty that would guide him throughout his life.
On January 27, 1965, David married the love of his life, Ella Mae Derrisaw. Together they built a life centered on family, love, and hard work. Their marriage was filled with devotion and partnership until Ella Mae’s passing in March 2006 after her courageous battle with cancer. The love they shared remained a guiding light in David’s life.
After returning from the military, David furthered his education by completing a course in computer technology at OSU Okmulgee Technology Center. He later worked in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he managed accounts receivable for Skelly Oil.
David was a man who loved working with his hands and had a natural talent for woodworking. Many members of his family treasure the beautiful pieces of furniture he crafted, each one made with care and love. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, sewing, working on cars, and fixing just about anything mechanical. If something was broken, David could almost always find a way to make it work again.
Above all else, David loved his family deeply. He took pride in watching his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren grow, and he cherished every moment spent with them. His steady presence, kind heart, and willingness to help others will be remembered by everyone who knew him.
David is lovingly survived by his children, James Campbell and his wife Tracie, Daniel Campbell and his wife Katrina, and Terri Martin and her husband Jeff, all of Haskell, Oklahoma. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren, Corey, Jennifer, Kaitlyn, Micah, Luella, Micco, Wesley, Kelsey, and Brody, and his cherished great-grandchildren, Jamie, Christopher, Elijah, Rhemi, and Josie.
He is also survived by his sisters, Wilmatine Campbell Griffin of Checotah, Oklahoma, and Billie Campbell Barrows of Beaumont, Texas, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and a lifetime of dear friends.
David was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Ella Mae (Derrisaw) Campbell; his son, Larry Gene Campbell; and his siblings, Claudie Dennis Campbell, Minnie Campbell Spotts, Cloe Campbell Ellis, and Kay Campbell Fabian.
David will be deeply missed, but the love he shared, the lessons he taught, and the memories he leaves behind will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
In honoring David’s wishes, cremation has been planned. A Celebration of David’s Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 13, 2026, at Hunn Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Checotah.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Hunn Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 211 W. Okmulgee St., Checotah, Oklahoma 74426.
