Claude Elvin Farmer Jr., of Arlington, Texas went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 28, 2023, at the age of 88. He was born on September 5, 1934 in Nicut, Oklahoma, the son of Claude Sr. and Clara Ethel Farmer. He grew up moving often, back and forth between Northeast Oklahoma and Northwest Arkansas. Claude left home at the age of 15 and hitchhiked to New Mexico, and then on to Arizona. He bought a protection knife with his first ever paycheck. He kept it his entire life. I guess as a reminder as to where he came from. According to Loretta, his aunt and uncle found him and brought him back to Oklahoma. On December 5, 1953, he married Loretta Francis Adkerson.
Claude was a very active man, who loved restoring classic cars, loved the outdoors, enjoyed hunting, boating, water skiing, and could have been a professional fisherman although he preferred peace and quiet over anything like that. He was known by many as the fish whisperer. We all miss the gifts of frozen crappie and catfish every visit.
Among his many accomplishments, Claude built champion race cars, restored many classic cars to perfect condition, and was a very good mechanic. In addition, he worked for Sears Roebuck & Co. from 19 until the age of 42, and after enjoyed his career working in law enforcement as a highway patrol officer for 22 years. Claude resisted Church most of his life. The Lord softened his heart, and at age 70, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was baptized at Southern Hills Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. He retired at age 71.
Claude spent his final years fishing and reading until his health problems became more prevalent. He still very much enjoyed family gatherings and holidays, along with interacting with grandkids.
Claude was preceded in death by his parents; first born, Karen June; and sisters Iva Elizabeth and Judy Ann.
He is survived by two sons and one daughter, Ricky, Tony, and Lakita, as well as his brothers, Bob, Leo and Dwayne; sisters-in-law, Bobbie and Sue Farmer; grandchildren, Angie Ball, Casey Farmer, Delaney Farmer, Katherine Grantham, Kayla Shipley, Melissa Duke, Sara Campbell, Shane Farmer and Tera Borta; and many great-grandchildren, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, June 2, 2023 at Hunn Funeral Home in Checotah. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday at Hunn Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery.
