Charles H. Sumner, 91, of Checotah, Oklahoma, passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at the Checotah Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Checotah.
He was born on September 12, 1934, in Noblesville, Indiana, the son of Green Sumner and Nina (Ridge) Sumner.
Charles served in the United States Navy from December 1, 1952, to July 22, 1954, on the USS Everglades. He worked as a truck driver prior to his retirement in 2009. Charles was also a member of the Checotah Church of Christ.
Charles married Mildred Dawson on August 18, 1967, in Tampa, Florida, and together they shared 58 years of a loving and happy marriage. They built a strong family, played an important role in raising their granddaughter, and created a home filled with care and support. Charles was a devoted husband, family man and friend, always ready to help anyone in need.
Charles had a love for woodworking and took great joy in sharing his knowledge with those around him. Charles never missed the chance to enjoy a lively gathering with good food and cherished every moment spent with his family—and with all those he welcomed as family.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred Sumner of the home; his granddaughter, Teyona Sumner also of the home; his children, Cheryl & Ron Cates of McAlester, Oklahoma, David & Sandy Sumner of Lutz, Florida, Kathy Hufnagel of West Virginia and Mike DeWeese of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Green and Nina Sumner; his son, Charles Sumner; his sisters, Eleanor Shaw, Amanda Smith and Betty Norris.
Honoring Charles' cremation is planned. No services have been scheduled at this time.
